DRILL

Drill is a very important part of being an Air Cadet.

When a group of 12 cadets walk on to a parade square, they are individuals.  However, when a drill session begins, they all work together as a team.  Instead of 12 individual feet hitting the ground, there is only one sound, the result of practice and teamwork.

Drill teaches discipline and teamwork, both of which are important in the ATC.  It also teaches cadets to be proud of who they are and even rewards those who have a particular aptitude for drill - by being a standard bearer at the local Remembrance Sunday parade, by taking part in the squadron mess dinner and even by helping the squadron win the Surrey Wing Drill Competition.

Drill is also used to move cadets from one place to another in a smart orderly fashion.

Cadets participate in various forms of drill, some of which include:-

  • Foot Drill

  • Banner Drill

  • Ceremonial Parades

  • Band Drill

As a squadron we do not expect cadets to attend every activity.  However we do expect them to attend the following events, all of which are ceremonial events marking important events in the history of the military, RAF or ATC:

  • ATC Sunday (commemorates the formation of the ATC)

  • Battle Of Britain Sunday (commemorates the Battle Of Britain during WWII)

  • Remembrance Sunday (the annual festival remembering fallen soldiers).

  • Annual Formal Inspection (Inspection of the squadron annually)

  • Wing Field Day (Annual Parade of Surrey Wing, usually at Brooklands Museum)
